![]() Please allow me a moment or two to introduce myself. I was hired by the Board of Education on June 27th as Superintendent of East Knox Local Schools effective August 1st. This school year marks my 10th year as a school superintendent and 16th year in education overall. I formerly served in the U.S. Air Force and Ohio Air National Guard before transitioning to this career. My wife, Sandi and I are graduates of The Ohio State University. We have six children and four grandchildren. Our two children that are still school age will attend EK Middle School and EK High School this school year. We are very excited to be part of this community and look forward to meeting you and attending school/community events. The great news from the summer break is that preliminary data from the Ohio Department of Education indicates our District will be ranked “Excellent” for the first time in school history when final results are reported later this month! The results could still change; however, we’re confident this initial ranking should prove accurate. This is truly a testament to our students’ capabilities and our staff’s dedication in the face of what we all know has been a serious financial situation the last several years. In an attempt to address the District’s finances, the Board approved on August 1st a November ballot issue which will involve a combination of income and property taxes. Specifically, the Board approved ballot placement of a 0.75% Earned Income Tax in combination with a 2.92 Mill Property tax. We are cognizant of the economy and its effects on all our lives. On one hand, it is unfortunate that schools really only have the option at this point of asking local voters to continue and even increase your support of our children’s education. On the other hand, I think it’s fortunate that communities have maintained local control to decide what their schools should look like versus letting bigger government dictate those decisions to us. This is a pivotal moment in time for the East Knox Local School District! Do we move towards fiscal health or allow the State of Ohio to come in and dictate our future through Fiscal Emergency oversight? What we do now will shape the District for the next ten years and beyond. Our Board of Education, the Administrative Team, our teachers, staff, and most importantly, our students need to hear from you as we continue the journey towards the November 6th election. The Board and I will hold our first of three (maybe one or two more if needed) meetings with the public to discuss the District’s needs on September 12h at 7:00 PM at the Bladensburg Elementary School. Again, I look forward to meeting you. Thanks for entrusting us with the education of this community’s most precious gifts-our children. Sincerely, Steve Larcomb Superintendent |
